Hi Ashutosh,
First of all I must say that you are doing a really good job by providing your guidance to the CAT aspirants. Well I have been working in the IT industry for the last 5 years and have never prepared for CAT. Though my friends used to prepare for CAT during BTech days and I used to discuss the quant and DI questions with them as I have been always good in Maths. Now i really want to prepare for CAT 2011 and even have 10 months left as of now. I had given CAT in 2005 during the first year of my job and had secured a percentile of 96 with absolutely no preparation except attempting a test before CAT ( quant: 99.2 percentile, verbal: 89 percentile, DI : 74 percentile) . However I never thought of preparing after that and never even attempted CAT after 2005.
I am writing a long list of queries from my end. Please be patient from your end at reading and answering them .
I have the following concerns:
1) On reading the net I find that there are many developments over the years and IIMA has set min 70% in 10th and 12th. My academic record is:
10th: 84%
12th: 69.6.%( just 2 marks less than 70% It's less as I was preparing for engineering entrance exams).
BTech:80.4% ( Dhirubhai Ambani Institute for Information Technology Gandhinagar Gujarat, you must be knowing as you have passed out from IIMA .
Is there any possibility of gatting calls as other IIMs are also going to set the same criteria as IIMA. Can you please provide your comments on above situation as just 2 marks shouldnot be a hindrance even though you have secured above 80% in other standards. Dont know how can IIMA set the above criteria as for example a person who has scored above 90% in 10th standard and less than 70% in 12th standard as he was preparing for IIT and even graduates from IIT is not considered eligible( strange enough ). What is your take on this? Does it mean that I should not even think of IIMs as game is over from beginning itself.?
2) My reading speed is not good though I am really good at conversations. I am not asking abt the tips for improving the English. That I can read from your other articles. What I am asking is how much time to be devoted daily for English to be a master at it . I am trying my very best to read as much as possible and following the other methods as suggested. I mean how much time to devote daily for english so that I can be a master for English as far as CAT is concerned as that seems to be a weak point in my armour . I am confident of having mastery in other 2 sections( quant and DI) by putting some dedicated efforts over these 10 months as they are primarily mathematical but not sure abt the verbal section. Does it require more than an year to be an expert in verbal or 10 months of dedicated effort is enough. I mean reading has never been my hobby. I would prefer sitting idle than reading a novel , though sometimes I would myself open something on the web and start reading. Still reading has never been my cup of tea. I have always been poor at English during the high school days. Now that there are just 10 months left I need to read a lot and read extensively. Can verbal be improved within 10 months or is it a time taking process and takes you years to be a master. Why I am posing this question is because if you are a master of verbal you can score a lot in very less time. You dont require any paper work for verbal section. It just requires your understanding of English, thats it. I have seen some of my friends who were master at verbal section attempting 42 correct questions out of 50 in CAT. Its the only section which can be attempted fully if you are a master at it.
3) I am thinking of resigning from job or going for an year break if possible so that I can prepare entirely for CAT and other management exams and there are no disturbancies. I am a hard worker and can prepare really hard. Shall it be a wise decision to leave the job.
4) Lastly how much time should I put for cat preparations on a daily basis considering my present situation as explained above. Please guide me on this aspect.
Request you to please answer the above queries so that I can benefit from your guidance. Thanx in advance for your suggestions and guidance.
